Mary Jane and Robert Hartenberger, moved their family to Paso Robles, California in 1994, with the pursuit of growing grapes and making wine; the outcome, Midnight Cellars Winery. Their 160 acre ranch, on the western hills of Paso, is now home to three generations of Hartenberger’s. Twenty eight acres of hilly, rocky, limestone-rich and south facing slopes are dedicated to growing quality, low-yield, sustainably farmed Boudreaux grapes. In addition to the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot varietals, are Zinfandel and Chardonnay. Midnight Cellars was the 29th established winery in Paso Robles and are the happy neighbors of many notable vineyards such as: Denner, James Berry, L’Aventure, Booker, and Caliza. This area, also known as the Templeton Gap, has warm days and cool maritime influenced nights, making it a prime growing location. Richard Hartenberger, son of Mary Jane and Robert, is Midnight Cellars winemaker. He has aspired to create the best wine from some of the best grapes grown in Paso Robles. The vineyard is planted on hillside and hilltop in clay, shale and limestone-rich soil. The sloping hills face the Pacific Ocean, making for cool coastal breezes and sunsets that sink into your glass of Midnight.
