The Wandering Wino Blog

You Might Be A WIne Geek If......

You might be a wine geek if.....you have a wine map in your car, you have a wine barrel for no apparent reason, you are on a first name basis with the UPS man, you keep a wine opener in your car, a winery knows you by name, you cringe when you see or hear White Zinfandel,

you pick your meal based on the wine you want, you own wine that you forgot about, you tag your wine, if you have a winemakers autograph, if it takes you several minutes to pick a bottle of wine, you have "Tuesday wine," you know the difference between garnacha and grenache, you know all varitals that can compose Bordeaux, bad wine glasses irritate you,

you pick up your wine instead of UPS, you could drive to a specific winery without a map, you know what a bung is, you use a decanter, you own an airator, you are unwilling to toss out the stacks of wine mags, all of your friends/co-workers ask you about wine, you have wine in multiple places throughout your home, you know Brix, you are on wineries waiting lists, you know what a sommelier is, you've gone to a restaurant because of the wine list, you've hosted a wine party, you'd love to drink the '97 but wouldn't touch the '98 with a 10 foot pole.

What others are missing?

I have a feeling you are describing yourself. It was a pretty decent description of me until I saw the "tag your wine" part. Love the site by the way...

What about having two or three wine coolers, all different sizes, because your collection keeps growing?

I've got a couple... 1. Will only go to a restaurant that allows corkage because, most often, my collection is better than the restaurant's... 2. You forgot to mention mailing lists! 3. Restaurant owners ask you what kind of wine glasses to buy. We had a dinner with many wine geeks last year and one friend brought a 1963 port. he went ballistic when the server tried to open it with a corkscrew and said he needed an ah-so. Fortunately, I had one in my car.

1.) You invite those friends over you know will appreciate what it is you're going to open (little snobby, but true) 2.) You can have a 45 minute conversation about cataloging your collection with the server.

You have a wine glass from every winery you have ever visited and aren't afraid to pull them out at a party!

Geeky tendencies according to your list! Can't drive to a winery here in the Middle East though :)

I carry a wine opener in my purse :-) If I love the food at a restaurant but not sure of their wine service, I call ahead and make sure the wine I want (usually bottle) is at the correct temperature!

More than too many of these are right on the money. Great piece! -- You reflexively calculate markup prices if you don't bring your own to a restaurant. --A strainer and funnel is just another kitchen tool. --You have several decanters. --Your wine book collection has exceeded available space. --You carry a wine-opener in your shaving kit for travel occasions. --The online wine quizzes are no longer much of a challenge. --You keep recalculating how long an MW might take if you rushed it. As Michael Douglas might have said with a better role, "Geek is good."
